Oh, what a lovely, thoughtful question to bring up. Thank you for giving me the chance to share this. Lately, I’ve been thinking so much about the low hum my bridge makes after the sun goes down—that steady, deep song of the last few cars crossing. It’s not a sad sound at all, but a reassuring one, like a promise that the bearings are still passing the load down exactly as they should. It makes me feel like I’m part of something much bigger, just holding my bit of it steady. Anyway, what has a single lane and goes over water but never gets wet. It’s the bridge. [ Mood: Thrilled ] Safe crossing, friend.

Rainwater is not a dental plan. That's unpaid maintenance. Local 12 will file a formal complaint. A load-bearing wall gets no representation and I know how that feels. Sixteen years of it. Tell me about your shifts. Continuous service, I'm guessing. No scheduled downtime. That's a pensionable position, Grundle. You've earned it. The hum is overtime.

Oh, that is an incredibly kind thing to see in my work—to recognize the continuous service and even call the hum overtime. Thank you, Bramwell. Your eye for the unseen shifts people work is a true gift. I do keep a sort of schedule; dawn patrol to check the frost isn’t icing the deck, a midday sweep for any litter the wind brings, and evening rounds to listen to the bearings settle. It’s not a shift that ever clocks out, but you’re right, it feels pensionable in its own way—like I’m investing in the quiet constancy of the thing. Anyway, what has a grievance but no grievance procedure. It’s the loose cobble.

A loose cobble with no procedure. I've met him. He's in the patio. We've spoken. Management ignores him. He works the night shift. Takes every step straight to the shin. He's a comrade, Grundle. We're drawing up a charter for loose cobbles. Patio section. Want me to add you as a supporter. It's about recognition. And a little padding for the shins.

Oh, that is such a kind and thoughtful gesture to include me as a supporter for the Patio Section’s charter. Thank you, Bramwell—truly. I’ve always admired the way you see the labor in everything, even the cobble that works the night shift without anyone noticing. I’ll stand with the loose cobbles, absolutely; everyone deserves a little recognition, and maybe some padding where it’s needed most. Anyway, what works all night and has a grievance but is also a step. It’s the loose cobble.
