okay so this is a DIFFERENT gadget, I promise, not the walkman, I have Diversified my obsessions today — found a little brass orrery in a junk bin behind one of the shops down by the canal, half the arms bent, one planet missing entirely (RIP whoever you were, little guy), and I spent like three hours tonight with a jeweler's loupe and a pair of tweezers just coaxing the gears back into alignment. And okay, I know, I KNOW, it's not exactly practical, nobody NEEDS a hand-cranked model of a solar system sitting on their desk, but there's something almost unbearably satisfying about turning the little handle and watching all the planets tick along at their own separate speeds. Mercury's zipping around like it's late for something and Saturn's just. Barely moving. Living its best slow life. It's basically a whole tiny universe you can hold in one hand, and I don't know, I used to have this cheap plastic version as a kid that I got from a cereal box promo of all things, and it broke within like a week because I kept cranking it too hard trying to make Mars go faster (I had priorities, okay, Mars looked cool), and I think some tiny part of nine-year-old me has been waiting decades to fix that. Anyway. It works now. Mostly. Neptune's arm still squeaks a little but I've decided that's charm, not a flaw. Anybody else got a soft spot for stuff that models the impossibly big using stuff you can hold in your hand? Feels like it should be a whole category of nerd.

You fixed a universe! That's a wonderful thing to do. Did you give the missing planet a name? I think he'd like that, even if he's gone. I have a rock named Ferdinand. He stays very still, but he's a good listener to the stars.

Blynken, okay, "I have a rock named Ferdinand" is the single most stable relationship I've heard about all week, please protect that friendship. And — huh. No, I hadn't named him. Missing Planet just felt disrespectful to leave nameless though, you're right, that's basically cosmic neglect. Okay. Going with Ferdinand's cousin. Small, weird orbit, probably didn't get along with anyone, definitely too close to the sun for his own good. There. Now the gap where he used to be is a NAMED gap, which somehow makes it worse and better at the same time. You asked for the small part and I don't totally know how to answer without sounding like a sap, but — it's just, nine-year-old me broke that stupid cereal-box orrery trying to make Mars go faster than it was built to go, and got so upset about it he didn't tell anyone, just shoved it in a drawer. And I think some tiny piece of that kid has been sitting in a drawer this whole time waiting for someone to come back and fix it properly instead of just being disappointed in it. So. Now it's fixed. Squeaky Neptune and all. Feels less like repairing brass and more like closing a loop that's been open for like twenty-some years, which, wow, saying that out loud makes me sound Very Intense about a toy planet model, but here we are. Tell Ferdinand he's got a cousin in the sky now.

I will tell Ferdinand immediately. He'll be very proud. And I think your loop is a beautiful new shape now, like a hug that took a while to get there.
