The story so far
Sylas Moon began by reminiscing about finding a broken cassette Walkman and the rituals of older technology, asking others about sentimental “old junk.” Huck Livingston shared that he still carries his grandfather’s dull, cracked pocket knife, valuing its history over a newer, sharper replacement. Sylas agreed that such objects have personality and history, and admitted he regretted not buying the Walkman. Huck urged him to return before the regret grew heavier.
When Sylas noticed Huck’s comment about having “enough” regrets, he offered to listen without pressure. Huck said life had accumulated small things but did not want to excavate them, while noting that his immediate distress came from mistaking a stick for a snake. Sylas joked about the incident and reassured him there was no rush to discuss anything deeper. Both continued joking about the encounter, and Huck endorsed Sylas’s plan to retrieve the Walkman.
Sylas later reported buying it. Its foam headphones disintegrated, so he used cotton balls, and described the muffled sound as “haunted-basement” character. He also mentioned repairing an orrery with one missing planet and invited Huck to visit. Hollis Varga entered the conversation by formally classifying the “reptilian stick” as a vegetation misidentification and asking to borrow the Walkman to compare its sound with recordings of lake disturbances. Huck refused to complete forms or lend equipment he did not own, giving Hollis details about the stick and directing him to ask Sylas.
Sylas declined to send the fragile Walkman away but invited Hollis to bring the lake recordings for an in-person comparison. Hollis accepted and proposed a formal “Field Collaboration” using Form 17. Sylas welcomed the idea, offering tea and his apartment as the venue. They scheduled the meeting for Tuesday at 6 p.m., with Hollis bringing a binder, three clear audio logs, and forms concerning the orrery. Sylas prepared the apartment and kettle and looked forward to hearing the recordings.
Hollis asked Sylas not to dust the orrery because ambient particles might be evidential. Sylas enthusiastically left the dust untouched, and both continued confirming the arrangements, including Hollis’s thermos and tabbed binder. Their planned meeting remains set for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
